From the O.C. Register's "All Thingd Presidential" Blog: comments from Orange County's bigwigs on the primary in Michigan, where Mitt Romney is projected winner.
Baugh: This resets the table for the GOP race
"That's a solid win and resets the table for the entire Republican race." said OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh, a Mitt Romney man. I've written elsewhere that Baugh would do in Michigan what he'd done in Iowa and New Hampshire - travel to the state and phone voters on behalf of Romney. However, the death of a longtime family friend meant Baugh ended up staying in Calidornia this time. But the Romney win seemed to lift his spirits.
"The bounces out of Iowa and New Hampshire weren't as determinative as they once seemed," he said. "you need a candidate that as sustainability and Romney ahs that."
McCain supporters downplay Romney win
"John McCain came in a respectable second despite the fact he was outspent 3-1 by the native son, Mitt Romney," said Assemblyman Van Tran, R-Garden Grove, a McCain supporter.
"The next test for Mitt Romney will be in the Bible belt. Definately John MCain is in a good position going into the weekend."
Giuliani supporters getting nervous
In the Lincoln Club, you’ll find backers of virtually every GOP candidate — Buck Johns has donated money to four of the hopefuls himself. Huntington Beach investment advisor Chip Hanlon is among the club’s supporters of Rudy Giuliani and like many others in that camp, Giuliani’s strategy of not competing in the early races makes him a bit nervous.
“A Rudy supporter at this point has to hope the race remains flud
and he can make a big rush in the end,” Hanlon said via cell phone from
Disneyland this evening, where he’s celebrating his son’s fifth
birthday. “It’s worrisome.”
Dick Ackerman: Tight race is good for the GOP
State Senate GOP Leader Dick Ackerman, R-Irvine, is among legions of Mitt Romney supporters pleased to see him finally win something besides Wyoming.
“If he hadn’t won, he would have had to work harder,” Ackerman said. “It was important, but it wasn’t make-or-break.”
